Project description“The Beggar’s Opera,” composed in 1723 by Johann Christoph Pepusch to a libretto by John Gay, will be at the centre of the June presentation of grundstein’s exhibition rooms, where it will be freshly interpreted in various new media. This opera also formed the basis for Berthold Brecht and Kurt Weill’s “Threepenny Opera.”In a similar manner to our project “Dichterherbst”, in which the story of the Dichter family who had been exiled from Austria, was commemorated, we will now place John Gay and his opera in the centre of our artistic interpretations. Themes such as poverty, prostitution, love, jealousy, social criticism and profiteering will be newly expressed through artistic means. Earlier film versions by Peter Brook (1953), Roger Daltrey (1983) and G.W. Pabst will be shown at film screenings.

Visual artists will devise new contributions via installations, paintings, sculptures and performances. In staged readings, performing artists as well as poets, philosophers and historians will play their part in giving the audience a comprehensive and fascinating insight to Gay’s opera and its modern re-interpretation.
